Scrum teams frequently encounter impediments that slow their progress. Some of these impediments are caused by the structures, policies, politics, and culture of the greater organization. What’s a scrum master to do when facing one of these organizational impediments? In this session you will meet teams from some dysfunctional organizations and analyze the problems they are facing. As part of a team, you’ll practice diagnosing the problems and formulating intervention plans. Chris Sims will guide your journey, providing feedback and support the whole way.

SV Monthly Book Club presents: [Update Title by Author] Date: Thursday, December 15, 2022 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Virtual Host: Marc Scotchlas About the SV Monthly Book Club The Monthly Book Club is a no-cost forum to discuss books and publications that touch on variety of topics relevent to project and program management. There is no club membership. Anyone can sign up to join. The only requirements to attend the events are that you have pre-read the selected book of the month and pre-register for the event. Book Selection for [Month]: Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire [link] by Brad Stone Almost ten years ago, Bloomberg journalist Brad Stone captured the rise of Amazon in his bestseller The Everything Store. Since then, Amazon has expanded exponentially, inventing novel products like Alexa and disrupting countless industries, while its workforce has quintupled in size and its valuation has soared to nearly two trillion dollars. It’s almost impossible to go a day without encountering the impact of Jeff Bezos’s Amazon, between services like Whole Foods, Prime Video, and Amazon’s cloud computing unit, AWS, plus Bezos’s ownership of The Washington Post. We live in a world run, supplied, and controlled by Amazon and its iconoclast founder. In Amazon Unbound, Brad Stone presents an “excellent” (The New York Times), deeply reported, vividly drawn portrait of how a retail upstart became of the most powerful and feared entities in the global economy. Stone also probes the evolution of Bezos himself—who started as a geeky technologist totally devoted to building Amazon, but who transformed to become a fit, disciplined billionaire with global ambitions, who ruled Amazon with an iron fist, even as he found his personal life splashed over the tabloids. Definitive, timely, and “engaging” (Jon Meacham, author of The Soul of America), Stone has provided an unvarnished portrait of a man and company that we couldn’t imagine modern life without. Book of the month: Death by Meeting by Patrick Lencioni Date: Thursday, March 16, 2022 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Virtual Host: Marc Scotchlas Book Selection for March: Death By Meeting - A Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni Casey McDaniel had never been so nervous in his life. In just ten minutes, The Meeting, as it would forever be known, would begin. Casey had every reason to believe that his performance over the next two hours would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch. “How could my life have unraveled so quickly?” he wondered. In his latest page-turning work of business fiction, best-selling author Patrick Lencioni provides readers with another powerful and thought-provoking book, this one centered around a cure for the most painful yet underestimated problem of modern business: bad meetings. And what he suggests is both simple and revolutionary. Casey McDaniel, the founder and CEO of Yip Software, is in the midst of a problem he created, but one he doesn’t know how to solve. And he doesn’t know where or who to turn to for advice. His staff can’t help him; they’re as dumbfounded as he is by their tortuous meetings. Then an unlikely advisor, Will Peterson, enters Casey’s world. When he proposes an unconventional, even radical, approach to solving the meeting problem, Casey is just desperate enough to listen. As in his other books, Lencioni provides a framework for his groundbreaking model, and makes it applicable to the real world. Death by Meeting is nothing short of a blueprint for leaders who want to eliminate waste and frustration among their teams and create environments of engagement and passion. Registration To attend the discussion forum, please pre-register (for free) and be sure you have pre-read the book of the month. Registration is necessary as we are limiting the gathering to 15 attendees, so that everyone has a chance to express their opinion and listen to others. For the people who have multiple email accounts, please make sure to check the email account used during registration. Thank you! ) Last Date for On-line Registration is Tue, Mar 21, 2023 Description: Today, the manager's role is replaced by the VUCA leader's. The role of an effective leader in the VUCA world has changed dramatically. We expect leaders to move from telling to motivating and inspiring others, aligning ‘teams of teams'’ goals to the overall strategic direction without micromanaging while giving each individual a sense of belonging to a shared set of values and purpose. Using an integral approach, we will explore multiple perspectives on an organization's people, practices, structures, cultures, and worldviews. This enables us to understand better where they are by applying Ken Wilber’s Spiral Dynamics theory. Participants will then be led through a series of exercises individually and in small groups to become more aware of our values and how to identify them in the actions of others. We will end by coalescing our learnings into tools we, project and product managers, can use to reduce scaling friction through value-based decision-making.
