Description:

Join us to help restore habitat in Coyote Valley!

On Saturday, July 29th, we will be pulling stinkwort, an invasive weed from the disturbed areas along the Spreckels wetland restoration area. This Christmas tree shaped weed is named for its pungent pine-sol smell-- gloves will be provided and long sleeves and pants are encouraged!

Since the late 80’s, stinkwort has taken over disturbed habitats in Santa Clara County, after fires and human activity. It not only replaces the native vegetation with thick stands

of small stinky shrubs, but it also can pose danger to grazers who may accidentally eat it. Volunteer weeding efforts have made significant progress in controlling this invasive.

The work itself will involve bending, kneeling and walking in uneven but flat terrain; it will involve using gloved hands and tools for pulling as well as bagging weeds in large contractor bags to be placed in our dump trailer at the end of the work day. It's a team effort with lots of rewarding moments on the land!

Items recommended for Volunteers to bring **:

● Hand sanitizer

● Personal H20 bottle (at least 2 liters per person)

● Any additional snacks or protein bars

● Clean bandana for wiping face

● Hat and sunscreen

● Long pants AND Long sleeves (thicker pants are better to avoid thistle stickers and you will want to keep the stickiness from covering your arms.)

● Sturdy close-toed shoes

● For your added comfort we recommend to bring your chair

**OSA will provide gloves tools, training and a portojohn for volunteers to use!

Special Instructions & Requirements:

-For location, please plug the GPS coordinates into your navigation tool of choice. There is currently not an address for this gate. If coming from 101, please take the Bailey exit and turn west onto Bailey. Once you get to the Santa Teresa intersection, turn left. The gate is less than a 1/2 mile from the intersection at Bailey and Santa Teresa and it will be on the right-- we will be there with a purple event sign. Please drive carefully as it is easy to miss-- if you get to Laguna Ave. then you have gone too far and will need to turn around in order to make it back to the gate. OSA staff will be at the gate with a large white event banner and will give you further directions on where to park and meet.

-Please arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. so that you can get started on time for the work project.

-You may want to wear clothes that you do not mind getting sticky from the stinkwort. It washes out easily with strong detergent, but the smell is not universally enjoyable. Please note that on rare occasion some people have a minor allergic reaction to the oils in this plant which is why we have gloves and encourage long sleeves

-You are welcome to invite co-workers, friends, and family to this event. The minimum age is 14 years and older . All youths must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Each participant must be individually registered
