VUCA: A PM’s Catalyst to Creating Value
Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA) influence and impact our projects and how we form our project plan, execution, delivery, and closure. The following areas will be explored as we exercise creative methods to take a head-on approach to the realities of the changing business environment.
Change is comfortable. Until it’s not. Good, beneficial changes are welcome and celebrated. We will examine examples of positive change and how our role, our responsibilities have changed as a result. Conversely, we consider events either with cause or effect that give ‘change’ a bad reputation. Technology is smart. A project manager can gain better visibility and insight into the state of their project and the ecosystem through technology and tools. Used in the right way, at the right time, complexity is reduced, awareness is increased, and momentum is favorable. We will look at technology tragedies as well and what we can do to avoid them. Leadership in a VUCA environment. Our projects, our teams, and our organizations need us to be the leader. Stepping up and leading in today’s environment is challenging and takes considerable effort. We will review examples of good leadership, and leadership that fell short of organizational needs. We close with ways to lead through volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

Jayne E. Booth Software Technical Lead, PMP, MBA, Scrum Product Owner, Scrum Master Cisco Systems, Inc.
Jayne has worked in the technology industry for more than 30 years. She currently is a Product Manager and Software Technical Lead for Application development driving product innovation, scale, engineering excellence and operational efficiency throughout the organization. Jayne held positions as a Chemical and Materials engineer, program manager, process architect, and strategy lead for large, complex programs in definition, planning, execution, delivery, and value realization. She currently manages Application Development teams, Engineering Excellence and Cross-Functional initiatives.
Building for speed and scale, her team have developed User Interface components, processes and standards to save weeks of development time, improving time to market for business value realization. She accomplished large-scale transformation in implementing a Change Advisory Board for enterprise infrastructure management, and introduced new metrics-driven quality standards for software releases. She is on the Advisory Board for Digital Transformation for the California State University, South Bay, and is a Global Lead for Women in Science and Engineering, an employee resource organization with over 3,000 members world-wide.
Jayne is an engineer by background, an advocate for technology for good, and for a sustainable, inclusive future for all.
